Weight Bias in Public Health

Join the Bay Area Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative (BANPAC) and weight discrimination expert Virgie Tovar for a powerful, thought-provoking two-session training on dismantling weight stigma in public health. Together, we’ll critically examine the cultural and institutional frameworks that have shaped dominant narratives about weight, health, and responsibility. Participants will gain new vocabulary, conceptual tools, and practical strategies for identifying and interrupting weight bias in research, policy, and practice. Wiser Dining Implementer Training

This interactive training is designed for staff and volunteers involved in congregate meal sites, aiming to enhance the dining experience through Wiser Dining. Wiser Dining focuses on creating a client-centered, health-promoting, and positive environment for clients. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, set achievable goals, and utilize available resources effectively to meet those needs. The training covers Wiser Dining’s core focus areas: client-centered, cuisine and nutrition education, site environment, policies and procedures, and staff & volunteers.

Application for the Food Smarts Master Trainer Program

The Master Trainer program certifies individuals to train facilitators for Food Smarts community workshops aimed at both kids and adults. Interested candidates should complete the application by January 23, 2026, for eligibility review. Selected applicants who are funded by CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) will participate in a comprehensive training program at no cost.

Nutrition Pantry Program for Implementers

The Nutrition Pantry Program is a healthy pantry initiative that implements policy, system, and environment changes at food distributions. Description: This unique training will bring a fresh perspective to your programs with the objective of increasing the health and resilience of the communities you serve.  Participants will: Explore the relationship between positive and adverse experiences and nourishment Learn the basic process and principles of applying a trauma-informed approach to food security settings Learn to implement the Nutrition Pantry Program (NPP) with food distributions in your community. Gain a deep understanding of the NPP mission, process, resources, leading pantry practices, and COVID-19 considerations Audience: SNAP-Ed implementers, food bank and pantry staff, University Extension professionals, and other individuals and organizations looking for an organized policy, systems and environment (PSE) intervention to adapt to their sites. [If an agency has multiple participants, each participant must register separately so their registration email address can then be added to our online training system.] Training Delivery and Dates:  This program includes self-paced content (videos, reflection activities, and readings) and live, instructor-led sessions. Registered participants will gain access to our online training system (TalentLMS) beginning early May, and will need to complete approximately 1.5 hours of self-paced work prior to the first live session on 05/22/25.  Key dates are as follows: Registration Closes: May 21, 2025 Self-Paced Course Opens:  Early-Mid May Live Zoom Sessions: May 22, June 5, June 19; Times: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time Total Training Time:  Approximately nine hours total (4.5 hours of live sessions and about 4.5 hours of self-paced work) Next Steps: Upon completion of this course, participants are prepared to implement the Nutrition Pantry Program at their site(s) and will then receive access to additional resources, webinars, ongoing support, and our network of pantry partners.
